Nothing is useful unless you take a stance…

Immigration Reform. The hot button issue of the day. I was speaking with Alyssa about it yesterday and it inspired me to write a blog post about it. Read on…
There are obvious reasons why people are immigrating illegally to the US. What is the US: the land of opportunity. Anything is possible right? And we see that image being bombarded to every person everyday so much that it is an accepted part of our culture. So obviously, that is an attractive prospect to people in a country where they can barely afford to feed their family. Is that their fault? Maybe they can’t get a good job because they didn’t pay attention in school. Maybe they didn’t go to school. Maybe they have been forced to work their whole lives just to make ends meet. Why is that, you ask? Maybe because they have huge families that they can barely sustain. What kind of person would have a family that they just couldn’t care for? How about a country that is uneducated about birth control. Or they are part of a religious belief that doesn’t allow it (catholicism). Are you saying that they shouldn’t be having sex altogether? That’s asking alot of people who just want to live and be happy. So yeah, there are reasons why people immigrate illegally.
Now, I do agree that crossing the border breaks our laws. And I am in favor of holding people accountable for that. But the point I would like to make is that these deaths are just the product of a broken system. It makes no sense to me to blame them for ideals and values that we are forcing on the rest of the world. If this is truly the land of opportunity then we should be bending over backwards to help people in need. I believe this so-called “opporutnity” is just a crutch that this country uses for appearances. It’s like Christianity. If you truly believed in a God and the afterlife then you would devote every waking moment to pleasing him. However very few people do that. It’s MUCH easier to make the mistake and say I’m sorry. We hold something like that close to our Judeo-Christian hearts but we don’t extend the same justice to everyone (ie. she told authorites about her dead child. She was obviously sorry about it). It doesn’t really matter anyway since the inherent vanity of politics (and people in general) will turn all of what I just wrote into…
blah blah blah, bleeding heart liberal.
Just had to speak my peace.
