The Musings of The Music Man

Therin lies the problem…

So I am reading this article about Hulu.com (http://money.cnn.com/2008/03/05/technology/hulu.fortune/index.htm?section=money_latest) which, in my opinion is about the smartest and best packaged thing that the old media companies have come out with. Fuck this whole apple itunes movie rental bullshit and fuck this Amazon Unbox nonsense!!! It’s just applying old marketing concepts to a world where the majority of user do a better job of things anyway (ya a bit idealistic but I think the point is valid).
So the article, like all these bullshit articles out there, starts off by showcasing the impending doom of the media companies ala the mid 90s and the Napster debacle. If you ask me, the television distribution/monetization system is about the best we are gonna get in a capitalist society. Let the advertisers foot the bill for something creative. Don’t ask the viewer to pay for your idea. (don’t even get me started on the idea of intellectual property – probably the most useless term of the 20th century). That’s bullshit. If we take this idealistically, art is art and elevates society. It’s our fucking greedy capitalist American ideals that twist us into believing that someone should be paid for contributing to society. Whatever happened to just trying to elevate the human spirit? WHAT THE FUCK!!!!
Anyway, idealistic rant aside, the problem as I see it, lies in the thoughts of these big media conglomerates that are so wrapped up in their bottom line (fuck capitalism) that they have the gall to say something like…
Sure, some online outfits were willing to pay for access to high-quality programming. The problem, says NBC Universal CEO Jeff Zucker, was that “nobody was willing to pay us what we thought it was worth.”
NOBODY WAS WILLING TO PAY US WHAT WE THOUGHT IT WAS WORTH!!!!!! FUCK YOU ZUCKER!!! YOUR PROGRAMMING SUCKS!!!
The real reason you network metrics don’t work on the internet is that TV’s are in practically every fucking household. Millions of installed user base. If you don’t believe me then look at premium products ala HDTV. You know why HD programming is such a pain in the ass? Cause people don’t want to spend a $2000 premium on the same old boring shit!!! (the digital tv transition is gonna suck) Look at the penetration of HD players (HD-DVD/Blu-Ray)…they’re are plenty of people who think that standard def DVD is good enough!!
At any rate, if you really want to see your metrics shift, then just watch your viewers dwindle as the price of computers drop to that of a common tv (almost there now). Watch as your millions of viewers are perfectly happy watching some idiot get kicked in the nuts on Youtube vs. The FUCKING Apprentice!
I am a TV JUNKIE!!!! and I would much rather have an internet connection rather than a cable connection since it’s so much easier to just read the news rather than watch it. Be entertained by something that is actually of interest to me rather than whatever wannabe comedian has a current sitcom.

Like I said, Hulu.com is the probably the best idea to come out of the big media giants for the purpose of the internet. It’s simple and, the big one, it’s ad supported. Why fucking fight free!!! Yes I am anti-capitalist but if you must make money then change your fucking business model. Cross promote, free tv but get a bigger cut of the product placement. Free music but charge a tax on the player. These idea are so fucking simple yet, it represents a supposed “loss of control” of their “intellectual property.” What a fucking crock of shit!

Rant over!
